Sonya Mongero

UNCW Area Rep

I grew up in Mt. Gilead, NC, and became a student at UNCW in the fall of 1991. While attending UNCW, I met my husband of soon-to-be 28 years, Trent Mongero. We have two children, Taber and Maris. Taber is a recent graduate from UNCW where he played baseball for the Seahawks, and Maris graduated from UGA and works for American Councils in Washington, DC.
I was an educator for 20 years teaching in elementary, middle, and high school. Prior to teaching, I served as the youth director at Masonboro Baptist Church and was the Nursery Coordinator at Scotts Hill Baptist Church. 

 As a coach's wife, I supported my husband ,Trent in his calling to be a high school baseball coach. FCA poured into our marriage and family for the past 28 years, and it was always a desire of my heart to one day give back to other coaches and their families in and through FCA. After 19 years of living in Georgia, the Lord called us back to Wilmington because I felt an undeniable call from the Lord to go into ministry full-time with FCA.

As the full-time FCA Area Representative on the campus of my alma mater, I serve coaches, athletes, and the athletic department as well as club and intramural sports and their sphere of influence through athletics.  

"FCA is needed on college campuses now more than ever. College coaches and student-athletes are under an extreme amount of pressure to win in the midst of obstacles seen and unseen. It is a game-changer for coaches and athletes to fully understand their identity is not in the sport they coach/play, but instead, it's who they are in Christ! The platform of sports reaches far and wide on a college campus, and it is FCA's vision to see the world transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes by leading every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His church."

Matt Treppel

UNCW Area Rep

Born and raised on the Jersey Shore. Though I grew up in church, my identity was in athletics. I played football at William Paterson University where I graduated in 1992.

 

I moved to North Carolina in 1993 & met my wife Marlies and we got married in Raleigh in 1995.  It was then that I gave my life to Christ and began a personal relationship with God through Christ. We moved to Wilmington in 1996 where we had a business for 14 years. We got rooted in a church and began to be discipled and make disciples.

We have three daughters who all grew up as FCA staff kids attending many camps as camp staff kids and as campers and huddle leaders as they grew up.

 

I was introduced to FCA at a luncheon that I was asked to speak at. In 2006 I came on staff part time as a area rep on the campus of UNC Wilmington. My passion to minister to athletes and coaches grew exponentially! It partnered my love for God with my passion for sports.

 

In 2012 I came on staff full time working both on UNCW campus and New Hanover county.

In 2015 I became the Southeast NC area director. I was tasked to add staff. Within 3 years we had staff in all our counties and college campuses.

In 2021 I was asked to take on a bigger role as the Lower NC Metro Director. This area included 16 counties. 

In 2024 I decided, being led by God, to go back to direct ministry. I came back on staff at UNC Wilmington to once again work with athletes and coaches and to assist with New Hanover county.
